Lamps Within Pitchers
Empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers. Judges 7:16
Here is a lovely Old Testament picture of a New Testament truth. I wonder if Paul had this in mind when he penned the following: “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us” (II Cor. 4:7). What treasure? The light of the glorious gospel of Christ, the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
The Christian has been called out of darkness into God’s marvellous light. “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord” (Eph. 5:8). What a precious thing this is! How thankful we ought to be. We once sat in nature’s darkness. We were strangers to grace and to God. We saw no beauty in Christ that we should desire Him, but now we are light in the Lord. Our glad testimony is “One thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see” (John 9:25).
What was the purpose of these lamps within pitchers? They were to shine out in the darkness of the night. Paul exhorts the Philippians, “Do all things without murmurings and disputings: that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; holding forth the word of life” (Phil. 2:14-16). By life and lip, we are to bear a Christ-glorifying witness. The Lord Jesus said, “Ye are the light of the world- Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matt. 5:14,16).

Children's Church
Although Sunday school classes have concluded for the summer, we would like to have Children’s Church for kids 12 and under on July 9, July 30 and August 20. The children are invited to be dismissed from the morning service during the third hymn just before the pastor preaches. A rotation of Sunday school staff will share God’s Word with them downstairs until the morning service has concluded.
