Our Daily Bread
Thy words were found, and I did eat them. Jeremiah 15:16
True Christians have a taste for God’s Word. They read it; they study it; they feast on it. Empty professors may be content with a religion that pays scant attention to the Bible, but believers indwelt by the Holy Spirit can never be indifferent to what the Spirit has written. Like Job they testify, ‘I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food’ (Job 23:12).
To eat God’s words is to receive them into our hearts by faith so that we live them out in obedience. It is to receive our inner strength, not from circumstances, but from what the Lord has said. His Word is always the final word on any subject. It drives away our fear. It establishes our assurance. It informs our conscience. It judges our sin. It guides our steps.
The Bible, then, is no mere ancient document. It is a living Word that is the Lord’s means of grace to our souls. By it He convicts us of sin, converts us from sin, and builds us up in the comfort of the gospel. No other book can take its place. Never allow any other literature, secular or religious, to take the place of the Bible itself.
Make the Bible more than mere reading material. Read in order to understand. Understand in order to learn. Learn in order to obey. The Lord has plainly made known to us His will in the gospel of His Son. Let us then embrace all He has said. Let us count His Word a feast of royal dainties. What a rich provision He has given us there! There He reveals the majesty of His person, the glory of His grace, and the preciousness of His Son. There He expounds to us the power of the blood of the Lamb and the security of our standing in Christ. There He meets with us to feed us and strengthen us. We need never go away hungry from His table. Feast richly on the divine Word today.
Quote: “The great cause of our neglecting the Scriptures is not want of time, but want of heart, some idol taking the place of Christ.” – R. C. Chapman
