“Ye see your calling, brethren.” 1 Corinthians 1:26

We often hear that our belief that we are chosen by God as His peculiar people leads to spiritual pride. In fact, the opposite is the case. Nothing exposes the pride of man more than the notion that what moves sinners to repent and believe the gospel is their own natural will – that they choose God rather than God choosing them. In contrast, nothing so humbles us as the honour of receiving free grace. Knowing God chose us leads us to give all glory to Him. Think of the people God has chosen:  “not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble” (1 Corinthians 1:26). God has chosen some of the great men of earth but not many. Rather, He has chosen “the foolish, the weak, and base things of the world [literally, low-born; people of no family – i.e., nobodies], and things which are despised and things which are not” (see 1 Corinthians 1:27 – 28).

The glorious thing is that God’s free grace does not leave men where it found them. The Lord makes the foolish wise with divine wisdom. He gives strength to the weak and places the low-born of earth in the royal family of heaven. He takes the despised from the dunghill and sets them among princes. He exalts the world’s nobodies to all the privileges of the sons of God.

Then, for His own glory, the Lord takes the people He chose and makes them the instruments of His will. Through them, He confounds the wise and the powerful. Through them, He builds His kingdom and advances His cause. Through them, He has saved millions, moved nations, and changed the course of history. To this day, He is using ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Never think you are too weak or insignificant to count in God’s work. Just live for His glory and see what He will do through you.
