Pray and Obey

“Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you.” Acts 1:8

When the risen Christ sent His disciples into the world to preach the gospel, He equipped them with the power of the Holy Spirit. No other power can make our service for Christ effective.

This is a lesson we need to learn. All the talent and ability we possess, all the efforts we make, all the planning and organizing we do will be wasted without the power of the Spirit. He alone can pull down Satan’s strongholds, open darkened hearts to the truth of the gospel, and bring life to souls dead in sins. The prophet Zechariah’s words are as true today as when he first spoke them: “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6).

The power of the Spirit is available to all who serve the Lord. Christ keeps His promise. On the day of Pentecost, He sent the Holy Spirit, who filled His disciples with mighty power. All through the book of Acts we see ordinary Christians facing and overcoming what looked like impossible opposition. Again and again, they preached and witnessed effectively because they were “filled with the Holy Ghost.” John Murray wisely observed that while Pentecost can never be repeated, neither has it been withdrawn. Christ still holds out to His servants the promise of the Spirit’s power.

Who may obtain this power? Luke 11:13 shows that “those who ask” the Father receive the promise. Acts 5:32 says that God gives the Spirit “to them that obey him.” The only Christians who cannot have the power of the Spirit are those who don’t seek it and who are therefore living in disobedience to their Lord. This answers the question, “How may I obtain the power of the Holy Spirit?” Pray and obey—that is the way to effective Christian service.
