The Believer's Mandate
“Go, and sin no more.” John 8:11
The trial of the woman taken in adultery demonstrates Christ’s power to cancel the guilt of sin. The law, represented by the accusing Pharisees, is swift to condemn, but Christ, who came to redeem sinners from the law, here shows that He can silence all accusations against those He pardons. On that day, He convicted the hypocrites, cleansed the guilty, and commissioned a new saint with a gospel purpose to live in the world.
To every pardoned soul, the Lord says, “Go, and sin no more.” Christ cleanses and keeps. He justifies and sanctifies. He plants the seed of holiness in each convert to enable him to strive to sin no more. ‘Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God’ (I John 3:9). The imperative need is to be born of God. Only then does the indwelling Christ control the life.
Holiness of life is the Christian’s earnest principle as long as he lives. Augustine prayed, ‘Lord, save me from that wicked man, myself.’ We who are born of God are transformed into a new life by Christ’s grace in our hearts. One day soon, we shall fulfill our mandate perfectly when we shall see the Lord face to face. Then shall we be entirely without sin.
