Bits and Pieces – 52nd Edition – February 28, 2021

The Bible teaches clearly the purity, or impeccability, of Jesus Christ.  Verses like this, “For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens” [Hebrews 7:26] make it clear.  Jesus Himself said, “The prince of this world (the devil) cometh, and hath nothing in me”  [John 14:30].

It is interesting to note the testimonies of the ungodly to the innocence of Christ.  Here are a few of them:  There are others.

JUDAS ISCARIOT. “I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood”  [Matthew 27:4].

THE WIFE OF PONTIUS PILATE.  “Have thou nothing to do with that just man” [Matthew 27:19].

PONTIUS PILATE.  “I am innocent of the blood of this just person” [Matt. 27:23, Cf. John 18:38. 19:4,6].  “I find no fault in Him.”

Roman Centurion.  “Truly this was the Son of God.” [Matthew 27:54].

Have you ever wondered about those foolish political, judicial, and educational decisions in government and society that leave you questioning the common sense of today’s decision-makers? The answer lies in the reality that there are two kingdoms in our society.

One kingdom is that of the biblical theist, who sees the Bible as his ultimate authority. His laws are true as befits the omniscience and immutability of its Divine Author.

The other is that of the secular humanist, whose authority is vested no higher than that of sinful man.  It is this philosophy that now dominates every sector of public life, with disastrous results.  A humanist root will never produce a Christian plant.

One of the great problems of modern society is the diversity in the application of the law. Some groups complain that they are discriminated against.  Many of these societal difficulties would disappear if the politicians would read the Bible and fashion their policies after its wisdom.

Moses was instructed by God to have one law for all people, the same law for the Israelite and the “stranger” that dwelt in Israel.  When people are treated equally, the charge of discrimination disappears.

Here are a few quotes from the Scriptures, as given to Moses.

“One ordinance shall be both for you of the congregation, and also for the stranger that sojourneth with you.” 

“One law and one manner shall be for you, and for the stranger that sojourneth with you.”

“Ye shall have one law for him that sinneth through ignorance, both for him that is born among the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them.” [Numbers 15:15,16 &29]

“One law shall be to him that is homeborn, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you.” [Exodus 12:49]

If our political leaders were to govern according to this advice they would find their task a lot easier.

Each January many Christians resolve to read the Bible from beginning to end.  When they get to Leviticus some give up, and others quickly scan through the book or bypass it altogether.  Don’t be intimidated, but study it carefully for many reasons:

The Significance of its Writer. Moses was not insignificant; he was the greatest of Old Testament men.  He should be listened to.

The Sovereignty of its Author.  Moses wrote but God authored Leviticus.  It has more of God’s direct words than any other Biblical book.

The Shortness of its Focus.  Genesis covers 2500 years, Exodus 360 years, and Leviticus about 30 days.  The Lord directs our attention from wide-angle to close-up important truths.

The System of its Teaching.  God speaks sometimes plainly and simply.   At other times He uses parables and illustrations.  In Leviticus, He often uses symbolical teaching.  The Old Testament “shadows” give depth to the clear New Testament revelation of Christ.

The Solemnity of its Message.  The key to Leviticus is not hard to find.  Look for the words holiness and atonement, and you will see how sinful man can be made “at-one” with the holy God.

The Statements on the Blood.  Leviticus is hated by the modernists mostly because of its emphasis on the blood sacrifice. The key verse is “It is the blood that maketh atonement for the soul.”  [17:11].

The Saviour that is Presented.  Jesus Christ is found on every page of Leviticus.  Keep the above in mind as you read.  Pray before you read that God will reveal Christ in the book.  Leviticus will not be a drudgery but a delight.
