Never Means Never!
“I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” John 10:28
The Lord Jesus gives life to His people, and the life He gives them is eternal: “I give unto them eternal life.”
He is able to give them this gift of life because He died to purchase it and rose from the dead to confer it. His promise of eternal life expresses and guarantees eternal security to all believers: “they shall never perish.”
By its very nature, eternal life protects and shields a Christian from the endless perdition of the wicked. By nature and practice every Christian deserves to perish, but having received eternal life, none of them ever shall. They can never lose it at any time or under any circumstance. The word never is far-reaching, absolute, and unalterable. Christ’s gift once given will never be revoked. Nothing in the recipient can cause it to be revoked. Eternal life is not granted on the basis of any merit in the believer, nor is it retained because of the believer’s merit. It is the gift of God’s free and undeserved grace. Nothing in the giver will cause this gift to be revoked. The Lord will not and cannot change His mind. His gracious purpose and promise are unchangeable. He has said, “They shall never perish,” and therefore they shall never perish!
Satan often tempts us to doubt the word of Christ, and, like David, to cry out in unbelief, “I shall now perish by the hand of Saul” (1 Samuel 27:1). Such a thought is false; such fear is groundless. He who has never lost a single one of His believing people has promised us eternal life and has made Himself responsible to bring us safely to our desired haven. Whatever storms we may face on the journey, our Lord Jesus has assured us that as His sheep we have “eternal life” and thus we “shall never perish.”

The Shorter Catechism
