UNFEIGNED LOVE
“Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren.” I Peter 1:22
A major evidence of the grace of God in our lives is love of the brethren. Throughout the New Testament, it is presented as such. In John 13:35 the Lord singles it out as the badge and ensign of discipleship. John points to it as evidence of quickening to life (I John 3:14), as evidence that God dwells in us by His Spirit (4:12, 13), and as an evidence of our love for God (4:20).
Love, then, is pre-eminent evidence of grace. This verse speaks of the love of God in our hearts for both the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. This love is both Biblical and spiritual. As such it is sincere. It is not a pretended love, but is born of the Spirit, bears the stamp of God’s Word, and spurns all hypocrisy. How different from that love which ecumenism parades in hypocrisy!
It is also a grace that is linked to purity. It germinates, develops, and matures in the heart that is pure. True love is always accompanied by purity. Much of what the world terms love is linked to impurity; this is not true love, but rather lust with all its unclean associations.
The Spirit’s love is fervent love. The pure heart is set alight with this love. It is warm, compassionate, and outgoing to others in sympathy, support, and self-forgetfulness. Let us pray for such an unfeigned love in our hearts.

A. The only Redeemer of Gods elect is the Lord Jesus Christ1, who, being the eternal Son of God, became man2, and so was, and continueth to be, God and man in two distinct natures, and one person3, for ever4.
